2 Timothy 3

2 Timothy 3 –
3 But know this, that in the last days perilous times will come: For men will be lovers of themselves, lovers of money, boasters, proud, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, unholy, unloving, unforgiving, slanderers, without self-control, brutal, despisers of good, traitors, headstrong, haughty, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God,having a form of godliness but denying its power. And from such people turn away!

I’ve heard this preached countless times from many different sources. I know this in an awful thing to say about the precious word of God, but to be totally honest, every time I hear it, I cringe. I’m tired of hearing people talk about how the world is going to hell in a handbasket. Just because something is true does not mean that it will feed me and nourish my soul.  Even as you read it you probably went through the same mental checklist. Americans, the “church”, the world… – Selfish- check. Unholy – check. Greedy, check. Lovers of pleasure- check. check. check. Yup it’s the last days. And I’m certainly not denying the truth in that. But as I read it this afternoon Holy Spirit showed me something that I haven’t seen before
“having a form of godliness, but denying its power”.

Ok, stay with me here.
Obviously, I’ve seen that before. And each time I read it, I probably shook my head at those who have all the knowledge a person could possibly want about Scripture, but never spent their life for the treasures that it holds. Never really being captured by the power of God.

But wait…
What is this power? Power to heal the sick, raise the dead, set the captive free, save the worst sinner? YES! But what if you narrow it down to this passage? It seems that God is drawing a connection here. Why are they living selfish lives? Because they’ve denied the power of a God who, when encountered, causes us to see that the only life worth living is one with Christ as the center. Why are they lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God? Because they’ve failed to experience the power of the fullness of joy in the presence of God that makes earthly “pleasures” seem more like a paper cut. Why are they unforgiving? Because they haven’t experienced the power of God’s perfect forgiveness.

I’m not done yet, sit tight : )

So here is where it gets personal to me. As a child of God who embraces His power I now have the potential to live a life that looks like this –

Lover of God and others
Attributing to God the glory due His name
Obedient to parents
Lover of good
Having Godliness and embracing its power!

This is the power of Christ in me and I make no apologies for it.

But we all, with unveiled face, beholding as in a mirror the glory of the Lord, are being transformed into the same image from glory to glory, just as by the Spirit of the Lord.”
We become what we behold…behold the Lord today!
